Raison d’etre

The tune that I’m addicted to lately – “Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari” by supercell which is also Bakemonogatari’s ending theme. Actually it played a very important role in shaping my life as of now – as the precursor of the idea of setting up the Stargazer Society in school.

Thanks to the song, now I eat, drink, sleep and think astronomy.

Not forgetting to mention the all-important night of the Geminids meteor shower, and of course a million thanks to the co-organizer Tan Simpson. As I lie down and blanket myself with the sky full of stars, the familiar patterns shone strikingly above, and as the sky goes chock-full of meteors at around 4a.m., I fell in love again.

And of course, the members of the MCKL Stargazer Society  for now, who had shown their solidarity for the skies last Saturday and on every meeting. Now, my free times are spent on devising new programs for every club meeting, all in the name of spreading the astronomy virus :D I’ve been looking forward to every Thursday now, even though it’s a full day of class because once I step in Room 1.9, it’s like I’m recharged and good to go ahead with full throttle.

It’s so ironic, haha…. to think that the thing that adds colour into my life is pitch black with small bright lights.

The speed of time

It flies.

It came to me when I was in my every 9 months dental check-up, and my dentist is a young man, I think quite fresh from graduating, at least 2 years-lah if including housemanship. And I realise that, huh, I have some classmates studying, or is going to study dentistry. Like, Adrian Ng of my graduating class which has gone to Universitas Padjajaran at Indonesia. A fellow blogger, James Leong is also currently studying medicine (dentistry) in India. We were at the same school but I only knew him long after graduated, lol. Even my cousin sister in Form 5 this year recently expressed an interest in becoming a dentist.

And most of us are also crawling everywhere by now, in every part of Klang Valley across every sectors of knowledge we’re interested in. Some may have even graduated already and moved on to undergraduate studies, those in 1 year programmes and enrolled in January 2010. It’s quite amazing to think in retrospect, that 1 year few months ago we were all in the same class playing cho tai di and slacking before SPM.

Ha, that’s life… 1 year on and maybe I will reminisce on MCKL and how it is so different from humongous Yu Hua. And of course, I am still wishing for everyone in 5E to be successful in your pursuits!

Why all men are equal, but some are more equal than others?

Why is that effort and reward are not proportional for some people?

Why is it that you need to sacrifice while others gain sitting there doing nothing?

Why the thing you covet, others have it lying dormant in their basement?

Why good people are more disadvantaged than bad people?

If there is really a benevolent God, why is the world still filled with unjust?

Forget about God, forget about any holy bullshit. The only Holiness is You.

Drawing Parallels II : Puella Magi Madoka Magica - 92827 akemi_homura hanokage kaname_madoka kyuubee mahou_shoujo_madoka_magica miki_sayaka seifuku tomoe_mami

I love it when I find two different things have some correlation with each other. Example of the week : the winter series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and its references to various fields of my interest, particularly, equilibrium in a system, philosophy and literature.

--spoiler alert --

Kyubey : The Mephistopheles of Puella Magi Madoka Magica

It is no coincidence that in Faust, Mephistopheles presents itself to the titular character Faust as a ‘small, cute animal’ , even though Mephistopheles is a demon in German folklore, or rather, a characterized version of the Devil himself.

Looks can be, and are very deceiving. Nowhere in the series preview hinted that when the series starts, you will hate and despise this cute furry little thing that grants any wishes possible to people who makes a contract with Kyubey to become a Puella Magi, i.e. a magical girl.

Excerpts of lines from Goethe’s Faust. If you are interested, please watch the series from Episode 1 to current (9), and read this article about what has been found by Madoka fans about the relationship between Madoka and Faust.

Reminding me of my Chemistry test next week. The concepts is awfully similar, from the entropy thing to equilibrium and the Le Chatelier’s Principle. The system in an equilibrium behaves as to counter the external change introduced into the system. As in “when you wish for an amount of happiness, you will also create an equal amount of a curse, so that the total amount of happiness and despair in the universe stays constant.”  You get a scholarship in expense of someone’s hopes to further their studies. You smoke and damage your lungs while the nicotine provides pleasure and relaxation to your nervous system. The list goes on.

Another example : Many a time in our lives we lament that our life is too dull, and wishes for some spectacular ‘magic’ or ‘esper abilities’ to make life more interesting. That’s the reason that drives shonen manga, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, online games, fantasy novels and anime close to the hearts of ours. However, as the famous line in Spider-man goes : With great power comes great responsibility. It’s not everyone that can cope with that amount of work. That’s why 5% of the world’s population controls 90% of the world’s economy. Because the other 95% cannot cope with that kind of work, they prefer to live a simpler life, self sufficiency as the key for survival where all is well as long as there’s food on the table.

The final parallel I could think of is a Chinese proverb by Mencius,

Before you are about to be entrusted with an immense task, you are first to subject your determination to test, deprive yourself of pleasures, harden up to adverse conditions against your favour, and face up to multiple failures in your attempts in order to hone up your determination, skills and perseverance.

In the end,

What’s your choice?
